ENG 3250: Native American Literature. Write a short (1200-1800 word, approx. 4-6 page), critical analysis that focuses on either Louise Erdrich’s novel The Round House or one or two poems from When the Light of the World Was Subdued Our Songs Came Through: a Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry. If you choose two poems, you will need to write a comparative analysis. A literary analysis is not a plot summary. It is an attempt to discern meaning from a text; thus, you need a clear thesis statement that argues about the meaning of the work(s). Like any other essay, you need an introduction, a conclusion, and well-detailed paragraphs that support the thesis throughout.

Your final product should contain as few style and conventions errors as possible and be in current MLA format (9 th edition). It is a good idea to create a strong working thesis statement at the outset of your research. Your working thesis will guide your research, evolving as your own ideas develop. With a narrow and revelatory thesis, you will have a compelling argument to guide your writing; otherwise, you may fall into the trap of creating a “patchwork quilt” of other critics’ voices. Your critical analysis should focus on your primary source or sources; however, you are required to include one peer-reviewed secondary source in this essay.

You should choose from one of the peer-reviewed sources I have provided on Canvas: “Introduction to the Introduction: Entering Native Space” by Drew Lopenzina (Week 1 module); “Introduction: Stories That Wound, Stories That Heal” by Daniel Heath Justice (Week 3 module): “The Story of America: a Tribalography” by LeAnne Howe (Week 5 module); “Introduction: Sovereignty of the Soul” by Sarah Deer (Week 5 module). You may also use the introduction to When the Light of the World Was Subdued Our Songs Came Through: a Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry as a secondary source.

Your Midterm Essay is worth 200 points and is due by midnight on Wednesday, 3/1/22. Please submit your essays as Microsoft Word documents. Your essay will be graded using the following rubric: Content (100 pts.): Does the essay make a valid and interesting argument about meaning in the novel(s)? Does the essay contain sufficient support from the primary and/or secondary sources to back up the author’s thesis? Organization (50 pts.): Is the thesis statement clearly articulated? Does the essay contain an effective introduction, conclusion, and transitional elements? Is the essay organized in a logical manner?

Are the sentences easy to understand, and are they coherently connected so that readers have an easy time following the flow from subject to subject? Are the errors numerous and egregious enough to detract from the author’s argument?
